Poem (8): The former alchemist

The former alchemist

This disappearing rabbit trick is quick

to dull on impact, thought the alchemist

who’d lost his knack, so hoped to puzzle thick

kids with some sleight of hand and snap of wrist.

His show, though slick, was underwhelmingly

received by all but the most gullible;

some disappointed parents warned him he

should sharpen up to keep his coffers full.

I once turned copper into gold, yet now

can barely hold a thrill for killjoy lads

who tell me they’ve already looked up how

to catch a bullet on their dad’s ipads,

he sighed, and tried to find the Midas lost,

he tried in vain at that poor rabbit’s cost.
