Hello!
I'm coming back to music again in some form or another.
So far I've got two blog titles.
-The Arctic Monkeys are the nearest thing to the Beatles this century.
-Madonna is the Margaret Thatcher of Pop Music.
I'll spare you those for the time being.
Instead, I'll invite you to a game I play in my head often (my head is not an interesting place).
I imagine I'm being interrogated and having names of bands/artists thrown at me in rapid succession (so I let my brain throw things out as much at random as is possible) and I have to name the one song I'd take on a desert island by each act.
Acts from the full spectrum of popular music, acts you like, acts you hate, you've got to take just one song.
It's not that much fun, but it's a bit of fun, more fun for my brain than my other main activity, which is deciding on the Top 10 English cricketers of the last 25 years ...
I'll get you started
Wham - Edge of Heaven
Britney Spears - Toxic
The Clash - Spanish Bombs
Pulp - Something Changed
Amy Winehouse - Love is a Losing Game
Wet Wet Wet - Goodnight Girl
Frank Sinatra - You Make Me Feel So Young
Dusty Springfield - You Don't Have to Say you Love Me
Slade - Cum On Feel the Noize
Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road
East 17 - Deep
Joanna Newsom - In California
James - Ring the Bells
All Saints - Pure Shores
Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
etc forever
Simple as that. What fun [NB Black Eyed Peas came into my head, and I couldn't I just couldn't, so I cheated. Don't cheat!]
I'm finding it quite hard to play this game - the rapid fire nature means it's tricky not to hear and band name and instantly think of a song by them, but it may well not be the one song of theirs I'd take to an island. So instead, should I list some band names mentally, then sort out the tracks?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, here goes:
Peter Gabriel: Games without Frontiers
The Wombats: Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves)
Blue - I literally can't think of a song they've recorded
Squeeze: Goodbye Girl
Pink Floyd: Bike
Jay-Z: sorry, drawing another blank. 99 problems I guess?
Gorillaz: M1A1
Richard Marx: Hazard
Jessica Simpson: nope, can't think of one
Everclear: another blank
Evanescense: that one song
Metallica: enter sandman
Jackson Browne: who? He's a singer, right? Why do I keep thinking of acts I know nothing about?
Duran Duran: that's more like it! let's see, I guess Wild Boys is the right answer.
Jeff Buckley: So real
Bananarama: Love in the first degree (or is it called Guilty?)
Bis: Action and Drama (you can see how I got there, but that's cheating. I think I need some training before I play this game again)
Anyway, your score was 7/15. How did I do?
Good stuff. Yes, that's part of the fun, when acts you know nothing about come into your head. Jethro Tull! Iron Butterfly! One Republic! The Slits!
